Hassan Barrel

Fort Wayne, IN

ER provided emergency response to an abandoned barrel recycling site. The 7 acre site was located near a residential area. Approximately 10,000 drums containing various categories of waste were found; several barrels were labeled “Toxic Waste”.

Initially, ER crews cleared brush and repaired the security fence. To maintain 24-hour security of the site, a private security firm was hired for the duration of the project. ER crews sorted drums and categorized wastes throughout the site. Crews used track excavators outfitted with demolition grapple and/or standard bucket. A bobcat with a grapple bucket was used to remove drums.

Empty steel drums were crushed and recycled for scrap. Drums containing waste were segregated by waste stream, consolidated, treated and disposed in landfills.

To maintain ER corporate commitment to use green products when possible, the crew used biodegradable and environmentally friendly Maizorb (corn cob based absorbent) in roll-off boxes to solidify waste.
